Noodle Bar – Whitefield, Bangalore

Noodle Bar

1st Floor, Phoenix Market City Mall, Whitefield, Bangalore – 560048

March 9. 2013.

Noodle Bar is an oriental restaurant which serves up cuisines familiar to Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, and China. The diverse menu is a relief to those who are tired of eating roti-gravy-tandoor-makhani food outside.

One of the several restaurants in Phoenix mall, this one was chosen as we wanted a lighter meal (as opposed to burgers, sizzlers or pizzas) to end our shopping sojourn. However it would be wise to go there earlier as we had to wait for atleast 15-20 minutes around 9 p.m. While leaving after dinner, we still saw several people waiting to get in.

Noodle Bar

Noodle Bar

The atmosphere inside was good – warm brown panels, bright lights, happy families, lots of servers. The tables were closer than expected so we had to wait for a better one. To my surprise, the server led us to a round sofa booth (the one which can seat atleast 4 people comfortably). We didn’t complain since we had loads of bags ;)

After a prolonged discussion on what to order (and we were spoilt for choices since there were several here!), we settled on Lamb Pao, Prawn with Crab Meat, Mixed Meat Hakka Noodles, and Ginger Lime Soda.

Note: The main courses here are not served with rice or noodles so these are essentially side dishes.

Sauces

Sauces

The accompanying sauces are what you would find in any similar resto – chili, vinegar, soya, garlic. We were also served caramelized onions in a pungent sauce which was really delicious (forgot to take a picture of the same). Made a mental note to make the same at home!

Lamb Pao

Lamb Pao

Lamb Pao are basically dimsums stuffed with barbecue roast lamb. The lamb filling was absolutely lip-smacking and I must confess being no fan of lamb – this almost converted me back to red meat! The dimsum batter was steamed and so soft that it was difficult to lift it up without breaking it. Oddly the batter tasted like the dosa version. Not sure if that’s how it was supposed to taste, oh well!

Prawn with Crab Meat

Prawn with Crab Meat

Prawns. Crabs. Two of my favorite seafoods in one dish and I was salivating just looking at it. These were large size wok-sauteed prawns in a spiced gravy sauce. The crab meat was lesser in comparison though. The taste was satisfying considering you cannot go wrong with seafood in an oriental sauce.

Mixed Meat Hakka Noodles

Mixed Meat Hakka Noodles

As I mentioned before, the main courses above were without accompaniments so we had the Mixed Meat hakka style noodles along with them. This was a meat lovers dream with squid, prawns, lamb & chicken with sliced veggies. Finally it turned out to be an overdose of meat and seafood but hey who’s complaining ;)

Desserts were skipped over since we could not move a muscle after the food was devoured. And to think I felt it was going to be a light dinner. Phew!

The service was attentive and to-the-point (they could do with dispensing some smiles though).  The meal costed close to 1600 (Rs.) with all the taxes thrown in.

Noodle Bar is a good improvement over the smaller restaurants which serve this type of cuisine. It is however overpriced and the food although good is not extraordinary to warrant the prices.

Infinitea – Vasanth Nagar, Bangalore

Infinitea – Vasanth Nagar, Bangalore
Infinitea

Infinitea

2, Shah Sultan Complex, Cunningham Road, Bangalore – 560052

January 26. 2013.

Infinitea is THE definitive place to head to if you’re a die-hard Tea lover. You will be able to taste various types of Green Teas, Black Teas, Herbal Teas and Fruit Teas. To savor this, they have a charming restaurant where you can order nibbles as well as proper main courses. Do look out for those quirky posters on the walls :D

I have been frequenting this place for ages and while heading there recently, I realized Infinitea’s review was pending since my blog came up last year. So here we go!

Infinitea Seating

Infinitea Seating

They have a split section with a balcony kinda seating overlooking the spacious ground floor. I always found the top floor a bit stuffy but since the place was already full, we had no choice but to sit there. No big complaints since the food is always splendid here. Newest addition on this floor is a television set which was tuned into cricket re-runs.

Hungry as we were (owing to skipping breakfast), we dived into the starters. Having heard eons about their Steamed Momos, we ordered the veg ones with cottage cheese. Along with that, we ordered the Iced Teas in Litchi & Peach flavors.

One new sight here was the service staff using smartphones to take orders and pass it on to the kitchen. Same with the billing. Great going guys – that’s the way to go forward with technology!

Garlic Bread

Garlic Bread

My memory fails whether the complimentary Garlic Bread was offered in previous visits but here it was. Warm, fresh & buttery with garlic & parsley on it, the bread disappeared before the iced teas arrived ;) The portion of the garlic bread was bigger in size compared to the ones given elsewhere. Nice touch!

Steamed Cottage Cheese Momos

Steamed Cottage Cheese Momos

The Steamed Cottage Cheese Momos arrived looking really yummy… especially the leaf-like design on them. The bite-sized momos were really delicious with crumbled cottage cheese (Paneer) stuffed into them. It tasted even better with the chili salsa sauce on them. I silently resolved to have more of these on my next visit… just too good!

Blue Cheese Pasta

Blue Cheese Pasta

The Blue Cheese Pasta was a dish with Penne alongside tomato sauce and chopped spinach. And of course topped with the heavenly taste of grated Blue Cheese. I liked the fact that each element of this dish was visible and not mixed together until it resembles one big blob.

To say I was stuffed completely after eating this would be an understatement. Not only did I have a really light dinner at night, the aftertaste of the Blue Cheese lingered on for hours. This was served with one slice of Garlic Bread. Heaven on earth!

Spencer's Spinach

Spencer’s Spinach

The Spencer’s Spinach which arrived at the same time as the Blue Cheese Pasta looked inviting as well. Basically it was Spinach (cooked in white sauce) alongside Penne (cooked in a red tomato sauce) with some grilled veggies on the side. And the obligatory Garlic Bread slice!

The Spinach itself was beautifully cooked and married the Penne perfectly in taste. I would suggest getting rid of the veggies and increasing the portions of pasta & spinach. Wholesome dish in itself!

Litchi Ice Tea

Litchi Ice Tea

The Litchi & Peach Iced Teas were not the usual bottled variety. I could taste the pulp in my iced tea and it was not too strong or sweet. Well balanced, it tempted another round of drinks!

The service was very good. Inspite of having only a bigger table unoccupied when we entered, we were invited to sit there and that itself deserves marks. (I’ve been reminded in most of the restaurants that we cannot occupy a bigger table although half the place was empty!)

The meal costed close to 1200 (Rs.) with all the taxes thrown in.

Infinitea remains my go-to place for great food (never had a single bad dish till date from the 4-5 years I’ve been going there) as well as their awesome teas (hot or cold). Even if the chef has changed over the years, the quality of food as well as the portions remain consistent and that is what ultimately matters to us foodies :)

Mainland China

Mainland China

Orion Mall, 26/1, Dr. Rajkumar Road, Malleswaram – Rajajinagar, Bangalore – 560 055

January 4. 2013.

Mainland China. The website claims that it is authentic Chinese as compared to the Indianized version of Chinese cuisine that is served here. Although there is one In Indiranagar, the parking problems in the area always put me off. Since we were in Orion mall one lovely evening and spied this place, it was time to find out!

Mainland China Entrance

Mainland China Entrance

I must say the entrance is grand, inviting & very Chinese ;) The colors black, brown & red were used boldly inside the ambiance and quite gorgeously. The restaurant space is quite big compared to most of the mall restaurants.

Mainland China Seating

Mainland China Seating

There is an outdoor section facing the man made lake inside the Brigade Gateway campus (where the mall is located), it wasn’t quite full but the prospect of mosquitoes drove us inside :D Need to add here that I’ve never seen a more beautiful ambiance in a restaurant. Inspite of a lot of tables, the arrangement with the wooden partitions ensured good privacy and yes, it was romantic!

Chinese Green Tea

Chinese Green Tea

Soon after we settled in and were handed the menus, there came a smiling server with fragrant Chinese Green Tea. It was complimentary and was served multiple times on request. Delicious indeed!

Pickles & Salad

Pickles & Salad

The accompaniments were fresh – pickled cabbage, cucumber and carrot salad & the usual sauces on the side. It was especially pointed out by the server (not the usual case with other places where it’s practically ignored along with the cutlery on the table!)

Assorted Dimsum Platter

Assorted Non-Veg Dimsum Platter

Since we could not decide between the numerous yummy sounding starters, we were recommended the assorted non-veg Dimsum Platter. This had several pieces of Pan Grilled Crab Cakes, Prawn Hargao & Chicken Siu Mai.

The crab cakes actually had a substantial amount of meat in them to my surprise. Not very oily and absolutely crunchy, these were instant winners on the platter. The prawns were fresh, light on the palate as well as the chicken filled steamed wontons. This along with the green tea was the perfect start to the leisurely meal. Oh and we also had Red Wine along the side which I could not get a good picture of!

Exotic Vegetables in Chili Basil sauce

Exotic Vegetables in Chili Basil sauce

The mains consisted of Exotic Veggies in a chili basil sauce served in a lovely clay pot. Well I wouldn’t say they were exotic since we could see corn, capsicum, carrots, cauliflower, the usual. However they were cooked perfectly and the sticky sauce was really good along with the rice. More on the rice ahead…!

Fragrant Pot Rice

Fragrant Pot Rice

We were tempted to try the noodles but on spying the Fragrant Pot Rice, we decided to go along with that. This was a lightly frangranced rice with mushrooms in it. Hubby felt that it was bordering on basmati but I wasn’t entirely convinced. It was the perfect marriage with exotic veggies, light and aromatic.

Orange Creme Brulee

Orange Creme Brulee

Though we were shamefully stuffed, I had to try their dessert which was the Creme Brulee. Now this is something I haven’t had for ages so I didn’t remember the texture or flavor. It turned out to be delicious although the caramelized sugar on top didn’t crack well (suggesting it wasn’t prepared fresh but was stocked – a point I remembered seeing from Masterchef Australia). But it was a minor issue which didn’t overpower the taste!

A special mention to the service – absolutely fantastic! I can probably go on record that this was the best service I’ve had in any restaurant till date. It was on the spot and they just knew when to refill the plates.

The meal costed close to 2100 (Rs.) with all the taxes thrown in.

Full marks to this wonderful experience with Chinese cuisine. Am definitely not a native of China so I wouldn’t know if its authentic but the flavors are definitely different and gobsmackingly good!
